Have you ever wondered why God didn’t transfer you to heaven immediately after you came to faith in his Son as your Savior? To be sure, Christ has many purposes for you here on earth. Certainly, one reason you are left on this earth is so that you can serve as Jesus’ witness in your own personal mission field.
Witnessing about Jesus is spontaneous.
The shepherds “spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child” (Luke 2:17). Think also of the many people Jesus healed who went home and told the whole town what had happened, or the Israelite slave girl who invited leprous Naaman to seek help from the prophet of the Lord. None of them had any formal training! Yet in another sense, witnessing is learned. We are told that Jesus “appointed twelve - designating them as apostles - that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach” (Mark 3:14). They listened to Jesus, learned from him, and watched him as he proclaimed the message of God’s love for sinners. After a time of training Jesus sent them out. Yet even then, the good news is so thrilling that the apostles did not feel forced into witnessing. Rather, they declared, “We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20).
