2017 Highlights -  LWMS Board Meetings

2017 Fall 

The Board of Directors (BD) of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS) met November 9 - 11, 2017 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay, WI. The Center is the site for the 2018 Annual Convention.

LWMS membership stands at 842 congregations and thirteen individual members.

With over half of the convention delegates responding, the business meeting minutes for the 2017 Annual Convention were ratified. 
A new form and instructions were added to the treasurer section of the Circuit Officers Handbook for providing receipts for single donations over $250.

The Church Extension Fund (CEF) has offered to pay for the LWMS portion of printing costs for the upcoming Missions Project Book. The Joint Mission Office (JMO) will pay the remaining costs.

The 125th anniversary of the Apache mission will be recognized at the 2018 Annual Convention. It is the WELS oldest mission. In addition, a generous donor provided a gift to help cover convention registrations for a number of the ladies from the Apache mission.  
Preliminary planning has started for a revamp of the LWMS website.

The annual dinner for MLC seniors is planned for January 4, 2018 in New Ulm, MN. The hosting BD members will use the opportunity to introduce the seniors to LWMS and to share how they can use LWMS programs and resources in their ministries.

Standing and Ad Hoc Committee News

The Communications Committee completed a new half-page LWMS flier and a new kids c.a.r.e. postcard. The items are available through the Central Office. 

The LWMS Awareness Committee (LAC) is proceeding with the new Ignite program. It will focus on three areas; one-to-one relationships, promoting LWMS in member congregations and introducing LWMS to non-member congregations. LAC will be presenting the program in a workshop at the 2018 Annual Convention.

BD Decisions

The BD approved appointment of Bambi Tuttle to a second term as Quilt Coordinator.

The BD approved a new volunteer position, Legacy Fund Coordinator. The coordinator will serve as a liaison for all LWMS endowment funds to our donors and will promote contributions from our membership. The BD appointed Karen Fischer to the first 3-year term.

The BD approved an Attend a Convention flier. The Communication Committee will complete for distribution by January 2018.

The BD approved a new flier created by LAC for college and high school students. The filer will be printed and distributed by campus ministry.

The BD reviewed and approved numerous plans for the 2018 Annual Convention in Green Bay, WI.
 


2017 Summer 

The Board of Directors (BD) of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS) met August 17 - 19, 2017 at the WELS Center for Mission and Ministry, Waukesha, Wisconsin, and the LWMS Central Office, West Allis, Wisconsin. 

LWMS membership stands at 840 congregations and twelve individual members. The number reflects a net loss of six members since August 2016.

The Central Office (CO) is ordering a new supply of umbrellas, blankets, notebooks and table easel stands for displaying posters. Members should contact CO to purchase.

The BD met with representatives from the Joint Mission Office (JMO). Pastors Keith Free and Larry Schlomer presented recommendations for speakers and workshop leaders at the 2018 Convention. In addition, they updated the BD on mission news for 2017 including four new starts and three enhanced starts for home missions and two new countries (flags) for world missions.

The JMO asked the BD to promote to membership the website, wels.net/subscribe, for automated receipt of mission emails and to encourage circuits to use the JMO for scheduling of rally speakers. In addition, they noted that large world and home mission maps are available to congregations by contacting the JMO.

Robin Christopher, Treasurer, noted that working fund donations are down for 2017. The BD is pursuing options to compensate for the shortage.

The BD has initiated plans for an LWMS website update.

Sheila Frey, Vice-President, reported that 100 Message a Missionary cards were written at the 2017 Convention and all have been distributed. In addition, congratulatory notes have been sent from the BD to all MLC and seminary graduates, who were given a mission assignment.

The Communications Committee is working on a new ‘come to the convention’ brochure and a kids c.a.r.e. flier. In addition, a new Project Book is being finalized for 2018 / 2019.

Mary Fischer and Ruth Schaller’s terms are expiring on the By-laws committee in summer of 2018. Candidates are needed to fill the positions. Jill Doering, a current member, was appointed as chairwoman of the By-laws committee beginning in summer 2018.

The BD approved a new half-page flier to promote LWMS. Members can request from the CO.

The BD reviewed and approved numerous plans for the 2018 Convention in Green Bay, WI.
 


2017 Convention 

The Board of Directors (BD) of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS) met June 20 - 22, 2017 in Orlando, FL.

Meetings were held prior to the 2017 LWMS convention. 

LWMS membership stands at 831 congregations and eleven individual members.

Previously, the only designated media for official publications was the LWMS newsletter. The BD added the LWMS website and email as options for distribution of official publications. 

The BD discussed the value of BD member visits to circuit rallies and decided to complete the current visit schedule.

Mission distributions are down about $4,000 and working fund donations are down about $1,000 this year.

The BD met with the committees to review reports and ongoing activities.

Tiffany Rivera and Wendy Wright completed two terms on the Communications Committee. The BD thanks them for their service. The BD then appointed Patty Hirthe and Cindy Hanisch to fill the vacancies.

The Nominations Committee is recruiting a new member for the Communications Committee and two replacement members for the Bylaws Committee to fill terms expiring in 2018.

The Communications Committee has started work on a new ‘come to the convention’ brochure.

BD Decisions

A previous quote, which the BD had approved for purchase of DOT (directors, officers, trustees) liability insurance to protect BD members, was incorrect. The BD approved a new $500,000 liability option to be added to our existing Church Mutual policy for $193/year.

The BD approved moving up the send date for ‘drop’ letters to members with unpaid dues from June to May 1. The convention binder will then more accurately reflect the actual membership statistics at convention time.

The BD approved the LWMS Awareness Committee to proceed with the LWMS Ignite program to promote grassroots awareness.
 


2017 Spring  

The Board of Directors (BD) of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS) met March 29-31, 2017 in Mequon, WI. Meetings were held at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary (WLS). 

LWMS membership stands at 857 congregations and twelve individual members.

BD circuit visits were reviewed for spring rallies. President Karen Fischer noted that the schedule and allocated monies for circuit visits are coming to an end. The BD will be evaluating the value of the visits and whether they should continue.

Final plans were reviewed for the upcoming mission trip. The trip is scheduled to start on May 22, 2017 with stops over four days in Las Vegas, NV, Lehi, UT, and Boise, ID. Karen Fischer, Robin Christopher and Tom Christopher will be traveling. A video will be created with highlights of the trip. Karen and Robin will be available for presentations at circuit rallies.

A new restricted fund, Rakow Endowment Fund, has been established. All distributions will be channeled to mission projects.

To reduce the large number of members with unpaid 2017 dues, a campaign will be conducted by email and telephone through April and May to encourage member congregations to remain current with their membership and continue to support our missions.

The BD finalized planning for the 2017 LWMS Convention. In addition, planning is underway for the 2018 LWMS Convention in Green Bay, WI.

On March 31, 2017, the BD and Central Office (CO) hosted a dinner for seniors at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. The dinner honored the seniors as they await upcoming call assignments and introduced the seniors to LWMS.

Ramona Czer was appointed to the Communications Committee (CC). The Nominations Committee is continuing to recruit additional volunteers for CC.

The Bylaws Committee reports that there are no bylaw changes for 2017. Reviews of circuit bylaws will continue on a five-year cycle.

The LWMS Awareness Committee will have a convention display to promote the REPEAT campaign and to share ideas.

BD Decisions

The BD approved purchase of DOT (directors, officers, trustees) liability insurance to protect BD members. A $1,000,000 liability option will be added to our existing Church Mutual policy for less than $100/year.

The BD approved purchase of new flags, as needed, to represent the fifteen countries added to our mission list. The flags will be available for the upcoming convention presentation.

The BD selected Pastoral Studies Institute (PSI) for receipt of endowment fund distributions in 2017.

The BD approved a slate of 34 candidates for displays at the 2017 LWMS Convention. In addition, they approved numerous other motions for the convention and for projects to be announced at the convention.
 


2017 Winter 

The Board of Directors (BD) of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society (LWMS) met February 4, 2017 via conference call. 

LWMS membership stands at 856 congregations and 12 individual members.

On January 5, 2017, a delegation of BD members; Sheila Frey, Ruth Schmitzer, Robin Christopher, Trish Babler, Pastor Wayne Shevey and Pastor Paul Lindhorst, traveled to New Ulm, MN for the Martin Luther College (MLC) dinner to honor senior students and introduce them to LWMS.

Peg Thiele, Joint Mission Office, launched a promotional video for the 2017 LWMS Convention on February 7, 2017. The video will be added to the LWMS website.

Online registrations for the 2017 LWMS Convention have started. The BD extended a special thank you to Robin Christopher and Beth Taticek for the successful launch of the new registration option.

Pastor Wayne Shevey reviewed the schedule and route for the upcoming mission trip. The trip is scheduled for May 20, 2017 thru May 28, 2017 with stops in Las Vegas, St. George, UT, Lehi, UT, Boise, ID, Laramie, WY, and Denver, CO. 

The BD continued planning for the 2017 LWMS Convention.

The Communications Committee (CC) is creating a half-page flier titled, “What is LWMS?” It will replace the outdated booklet titled, “LWMS United to Serve Jesus.” The new flier should be available for fall rallies.

BD Decisions

The BD decided to discontinue sending of binders to the circuits with handbooks. This will significantly cut costs for handbook supplies and postage.

The BD voted to print 2,000 Send One Sister (SOS) brochures for the LWMS Awareness Committee (LAC) Awareness Kit, for distribution from the LAC booth at the 2017 Convention and to fulfil requests from circuit presidents.

The BD approved a slate of candidates for the 2017 BD elections.
