"But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit." Ephesians 2:13-18 NIV

At every new year people are asked what they want most for the next year. Many respond, "Peace!" They want peace among nations, not the peace recorded in the above verses. All of us would like peace among nations—yet scripture tells us there will always be wars and rumors of wars.

We do have an everlasting peace onto which we firmly hold. Jesus brought peace between God and man, for he opened the direct access we have now with our Heavenly Father. We are one in Christ Jesus through His blood. "For he himself is our peace who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier". That's the peace the angels sang about, the peace we Christians have in our hearts and lives—a peace beyond our understanding!

No longer do we need to worry about keeping the law, for we can't. When we fall into sin, we know we have a Savior, Jesus, who kept the law perfectly for us! Jesus came to suffer and die for our sins and failures! He brings us the peace we know between God and ourselves. The world doesn't know or understand that. That's why we must go and tell the world in the new year!
