And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us (Romans 5:5).

We have the Holy Spirit as a gift in our hearts.  Sometimes we forget or do not realize the gifts which God has given to us.  Of course, we are abundantly blessed with material blessings, but think about the spiritual blessings.

The verse above reminds us of some of our spiritual blessings.  First of all, we have hope that will not let us down.  We know beyond doubt that God has given us an eternal home that is waiting for us.  In the meantime, God pours out, not sprinkles, his love into our hearts.  He does this through the Holy Spirit who also takes up residence in our hearts and reminds us of these wonderful truths.

Since our hearts are full of God’s love (since love is poured into it), it overflows into our lives.  We can now view our life as God would have us see it with an attitude that pleases him.  Paul reminds us that our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5).  What a blessing to be able to view our day as a gift from him to use for him!  We have the privilege of making our words and actions reflect God’s love inside of us.  As God pours his love into our hearts, we have the privilege to turn around and pour it out to our spouse, children, God’s people, and all those we meet that God has placed on our path.

God’s love through us shows itself in a smile to the person we pass in the aisle, or in the simple asking of how the cashier’s day is going.  It’s building a little margin into our lives and the coming away from our cell phones so that we recognize the many people that come in and out of our lives.  It’s the realization that people are lonely and few take the time to notice.  It’s taking the time to greet your coworker and show interest with eye to eye contact.  It’s recognizing those that are lonely and suffering.  Those are the opportunities that lead to sharing the love that God has for each individual and the hope that we have through Jesus.

Lord, help me to appreciate the spiritual blessings you continue to pour into me.  Help me to build a little margin into my life so that I see the lonely and the person that is going through difficulties.  Give me the words to share your love and the hope that we have with others.  Amen.
